About the Paeroa Basketball Association

The Paeroa Basketball Association encourages, and provides facilities for, young people from 5 – 19 years who are keen on shooting hoops and honing their skills on the court. Mini league competitions, tournaments and training are run throughout the year, providing fun and physical activity for many primary and college students in the area.

What the grant went towards

NZCT funding enabled the Paeroa Basketball Association to purchase an electronic scoreboard and shot clocks. They had been running their games without this equipment for four years, and were at risk of losing the ability host games at their home venue.

What this meant for the organisation

The new equipment allows the Association to keep hosting home games, and increase parental involvement for those who found it unaffordable to travel to other centres support their children. Association Secretary Josey McKain says the fact that the players can participate in, and host, local competitions boosts their pride and sense of value.

Now, players and teams can see the actual score. They can keep up to date with team fouls and the position of the ball. With the shot clock, the teams can see the amount of time an offence is given to shoot the ball," says Josey.
